Peanuts Coming Up in Oklahoma

Most peanut fields were planted before the May 23-25 rainfall.  Many fields are at either the cracking stage or already up and stands are looking very good, I don't expect to see many fields replanted.  The photo on the left was taken north of Hydro and appears to be coming up despite the heavy rainfall it received.  The photo on the right was taken west of Fort Cobb Lake and is a very good stand, it was apparently fully emerged prior to the rainfall.

Ag On Lincoln

The Oklahoma Peanut Commission participated in the AG On Lincoln event held at the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry parking lot on May 18th.   This is part of our on-going efforts to promote peanut products in Oklahoma and gives us the opportunity to educate the public on peanuts and peanut production.

HEAT STRESS

Summertime temperatures have arrived early, and it is easy to get dehydrated or just too hot, too fast.  Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion may develop suddenly or over time, especially with prolonged periods of hard work. Possible heat exhaustion signs and symptoms include:

  • Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat
  • Heavy sweating
  • Faintness
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Weak, rapid pulse
  • Low blood pressure upon standing
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea

PEANUT PLANTING IS UNDERWAY IN OKLAHOMA

As you can see we have good average soil temperatures for planting peanuts. Temperatures are ideal in the Caddo, Blaine, Custer, and Beckham county growing areas.  Many growers are planting this week.  To keep up with soil temperatures go to the Oklahoma Mesonet site: mesonet.org .
